With the Flames season coming to a close, there will be no playoff hockey in Calgary. As Tate Laycraft reports, bars and restaurants are feeling a different kind of fomo.

With the Calgary Flames officially eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs, fans will miss the team hitting the ice, and bars and restaurants will miss out on a boom in business.

“There’s really nothing that creates that type of energy in Calgary like a Flames playoff run,” said Harry Dimitriadis, co-owner of the Jamesons Pub.

“I remember going out a lot last year like when they were in the playoffs with my friends and It was so fun. Like every single bar down here was packed,” one Calgarian told CityNews.

“It’s a massive difference. When the team is in the playoffs everybody gets energized, and you know, a good chunk of the city comes down to 17th Avenue and they’re ready to go,” said Dimitriadis.

With patio and Stampede season on the horizon, Dimitriadis did admit that Jameson’s still has things to look forward to.

He also acknowledged that the Flames’ failure allows the bar to open its doors to a different kind of fans.

“There’s a lot of Oilers fans in Calgary. There’s a lot of people who have moved here from Edmonton. They’re an Alberta team, so if our team isn’t in it, we’re happy to support the Oilers absolutely,” said Dimitriadis.

Calgarians are still expected to hit the bars.

“It might have been a little greater for the businesses if they would’ve made it, but I think the fans will still be out. I think so,” a Calgarian said.

For those opposed to treason, there is another option for hockey in Calgary, as the American Hockey League’s Wranglers are gearing up for their first playoff appearance since moving to the city.

With three games remaining in their season, the team currently sits first in the entire league.
