Alberta NDP leader Rachel Notley says her party would introduce a tax credit for Albertans that can be applied to the cost of any recreational or extracurricular activity for kids if they win the May 29 election.
“I know these days parents are making hard decisions because they can’t afford all the opportunities they want for their kids,” she said.
The Kids Activity Tax Credit is a tax-refundable credit of up to $500 per child each year, the NDP leader explained Tuesday.
“Our plan means more opportunities for Alberta kids to learn new things, score more goals, and follow their dreams. It also means fewer tough choices for parents,” Notley added. “No more struggling to choose between soccer or swimming lessons, art classes or coding camp.”

All extracurricular programming for kids under 18 will be eligible, including hockey and ringette registration fees, science camp, piano, violin or guitar lessons, dance classes and an indoor climbing wall membership.
According to the party, there would be no application process — parents would get their money back when they file taxes.
Notley also announced another campaign promise Wednesday: a program called Hometown Alberta that she said would provide funds to build, repair and expand local community facilities like arenas and ball diamonds.
The leader said the program would create 1,500 jobs over three years.
