Calgary Zoo’s peacocks back lingering on zoo grounds

The Calgary Zoo announced Saturday its seven peacocks are back on the grounds.

In a video posted on Twitter, the zoo shares how its muster of peacocks arrived.

“Upon arrival, they immediately started making their way to their favourite areas,” reads the tweet.

The zoo reminds people to give the peacocks space and to not touch or feed them.

The peacock is the male of the peafowl, while the female peafowl is referred to as peahen.

However, in everyday language, we refer to both genders as peacock.

Their tail feathers, also known as coverts, constitute more than 60 per cent of the peacock’s total body, spreading out in a distinctive train and boasting “eye” markings in many colours.

Their distinctive and large train is used in mating rituals and courtship displays.

There are three species of peacocks, two Asiatic and one African.

The two Asiatic species are the blue, or Indian peafowl, and the green peafowl of Southeast Asia.
