Alberta’s election resulted in a UCP victory, but the NDP didn’t trail far behind. As Jillian Code reports, only a few hundred votes made the difference in many ridings.

Though Calgary was long called the battleground in this provincial election, some ridings still ended closer than expected.

Robyn Bell with Elections Alberta says recounts will take place in at least two of the city’s ridings over the next 10 days.

Official election results are expected to be announced on June 8.

Calgary-Acadia was separated by just seven votes, giving the NDP’S Diana Batten, a nurse, a slight edge over the former health minister Tyler Shandro.

This was followed closely by Calgary-Glenmore’s race with 30 votes. The NDP’s Nagwan Al-Guneid defeated incumbent UCP minister Whitney Issik in that riding.

Calgary-North was also close, with a 113-vote margin, and was ultimately taken by the UCP.

Calgary North-West was separated by 149 votes, giving Rajan Sawhney the lead. Sawhney formerly held the seat in Calgary-North East which was captured by Gurinder Brar from the NDP.

Also close, though not as close, were Calgary-Foothills and Calgary-Edgemont.

Elections Alberta explains that in divisions where the difference between the leader and the runner-up is 100 votes or less, the returning officer will perform a full recount of all election day, mobile voting and special ballots.

This is confirmed to be the case in Calgary-Acadia and Calgary-Glenmore, Bell said.

For areas where the difference is 101 votes or more, the returning officer will review all statement of votes, rejected ballots and objected ballots, she added.

In cases of either an official count or an official verification, Elections Alberta says all tabulator results are reviewed and verified.
