Edson, Greenview ordered to evacuate due to wildfires

By Todd Kaufman

The town of Edson and a large part of Yellowhead County west of Edmonton are now under an evacuation order due to increased wildfire activity.

Residents are being told to get out immediately because the fires are becoming increasingly unpredictable and moving closer to more populated areas including the town of Edson.

The western boundary of the evacuation zone is Range Road 200. The northern boundary is Township 570 to Range Road 160, then north to Township 580 east to Highway 751, and south to Township 520, and includes the town of Edson, which has a population of about 8,400 people.

The population of Yellowhead County is over 11,000.

A reception centre has been set up at the Edmonton Expo Centre.

More information is available on the town of Edson’s website at edson.ca

Greenview evacuation ordered

To the northeast, an evacuation order has been issued for the Municipal District of Greenview as well.

Over 5,000 people in the area have been ordered to register as an evacuee at the Horizon Inn at 5204 Highway Street, which has been set up as a reception centre.

The province says this is due to a wildfire burning out of control to the southeast of Sweathouse.
