What’s happening in Calgary this weekend

By Shilpa Downton and Lisa Grant

After a chilly start to the week, temperatures in Calgary are beginning to look up just in time for a weekend that’s set to be action-packed.

Friday night will see another concert along 17 Avenue featuring music from The Definitive Official.

Summer on 17th — a three-month-long festival that features tons of free entertainment — kicked off on June 21 at Tomkins Park and included rock/country duo Double Suede and many more artists.

Tulene Steiestol with the 17 Ave Business Improvement Area says they first launched the event last year to help showcase what the area has to offer.

“We’ve got our local gyms that are going to be doing free fitness classes in Tomkins Park, and then wouldn’t it be great to meet some girlfriends, workout in the park, and then go grab a brunch and maybe put those calories back on with a boozy brunch somewhere on the avenue?” she said.

“It’s really a matter of having programming that’s supporting community, creating a place for the community to gather.”

Summer on 17th will feature free events throughout most days of the week, including Fitness in the Park and Showtunes in the Park on Saturday. More information can be found online.

Sled Island back in action

Sled Island is back by popular demand. The five-day arts and music festival will showcase a wide array of comedy, film, and art, with performances by more than 250 bands.

It’s on until Sunday at various Calgary venues.

Not to be missed is Sled Island’s Ramsay Block Party, which will feature live music, art, skateboarding, beer, cocktails, food trucks, and much more.

Dover’s Music and Art in the Garden is also happening throughout the weekend.

Now in its third year, organizer Laura Combden said the event was something positive to come from the pandemic.

“During the pandemic, everyone was kind of sheltering in place and the Dover Community Association wanted to bring people out to an outdoor summer event and reached out for any ideas,” she recalled. “Me and a few other friends in the neighbourhood came to them with this idea for a music festival.”

She adds it’s a way for the community to come together and enjoy beautiful views while listening to some homegrown talent.

The free family-friendly event is happening all weekend from 6-8:30 p.m.

And, if you don’t mind getting a little dirty, you can check out the Mud Fair for live music, outdoor yoga, mud slides, and a mud race, which is happening on Sunday at Highfield Farm.

Tickets for that event are $5. More information on Sled Island can be found online.
