Calgary Fire battles blaze in Saddle Ridge, 2 homes ‘uninhabitable’

Two homes are destroyed and four are left damaged after a fire in the northeast Calgary community of Saddle Ridge Wednesday evening.

The Calgary Fire Department says it received “several” 911 calls around 8 p.m. for reports of a garage fire on Savanna Way SE.

When responders arrived, the department says they found a two-storey home and detached garage fully involved, with fire and flames spreading to the house next door.

Crews began to attack the flames while checking for occupants of both the source home and the exposed home, it added.

The department says the size of the fire forced firefighters to use aerial streams and large-volume hoses to fight the blaze and protect neighbouring homes.

Residents of the impacted homes were able to get out safely before the department arrived.

The home in which the fire started, as well as a home beside it, suffered significant damage and will be inhabitable, according to the Calgary Fire Department.

Four other homes are left with damage to their siding. Residents were allowed back into these homes after the fire was extinguished and crews completed air quality testing, the department said.

Firefighters remained on scene throughout the night to monitor the homes.

Alberta Health Services crews were also on scene, though no injuries were reported.

Calgary Police Services were also sent to the scene to help with safety and traffic control.

Investigators are continuing to work on determining the cause and the origin of the fire.
