It wouldn’t be the Calgary Stampede without some rain showers.
Environment and Climate Change Canada’s (ECCC) thunderstorm warning for the city ended Thursday, while a thunderstorm watch continues on the same day as Sneak-A-Peak for the Stampede.
The ECCC says conditions are favourable for severe thunderstorms, which can create “strong wind gusts, up to nickel size hail and heavy rain.”
It adds that thunderstorms will continue to develop this evening and will weaken overnight.
A thunderstorm warning was issued at 5:45 p.m. Thursday, which ended at around 7:15 p.m. The ECCC says the storm over northwest Calgary was “nearly stationary.”
“Very large hail can damage property, break windows, dent vehicles and cause serious injury. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads,” the ECCC said. “Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors.”
The ECCC says it issues warnings when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, and torrential rainfall.
A caller to CityNews says an underpass on John Laurie Boulevard has flooded an underpass going westbound.
“There’s about two or three people, two or three people cars that are underwater, and people are climbing out of this of their cars,” she said.
“It’s packed, and firefighters are there already because the water is above the car level under the bridge.”

The fire department and Calgary police stress to drivers not to drive into water in underpasses unless you know it’s not very deep.
