Family of Alberta helicopter pilot killed battling fires seek aid in his remembrance

A helicopter pilot who died fighting wildfires in northern Alberta’s Peace River Region is being remembered for his “giant heart” by his family.

Ryan Gould was piloting a Bell 205A helicopter during firefighting northeast of Peace River near Haig Lake when he collided with terrain while bucketing, according to officials with the Transportation Safety Board (TSB).

Responders were then flown to the site where forestry workers were doing CPR. Gould was rushed to hospital where he was then declared dead.

The TSB say an investigation is ongoing.

Gould was born and raised in Whitecourt and was a second-generation pilot, and “the only thing he loved more than flying was his family, especially his wife and boys.”

“He had a passion for all his animals, fast cars, and good food. He loved BBQing, and he made the best meat around,” a statement from the family reads.

“As a family, we all fought over who got his gifts and homemade meat rubs in our family Xmas draws. When he was cooking, no one missed dinner.

“Ryan told the best jokes and stories and could make anyone laugh. His giant heart and willingness to always lend a helping hand will be missed.”

Gould leaves behind his wife of over 13 years, Carlyn; two young sons, Gus and Evan; his parents, Eric and Gail; and two older sisters, Jessie Mitton and Naomi Yanik.

He also leaves two Gypsy Vanner cross horses.

At work, Gould was touted as a skilled pilot, who was nicknamed “Panda” because he was a “big guy with a big heart.”

The family is asking for donations as they say the loss was something they were not prepared for.

A celebration of life is scheduled for Aug. 5.
