Calgary in the clear, but surrounding areas under fire restrictions

Though Calgary itself is currently being spared from any fire restrictions, surrounding areas can’t say the same.

Another bout of hot and dry conditions once again this summer, according to albertafirebans.ca, has prompted local governments in Foothills County to the south of the city, Vulcan County and the County of Newell to the southeast, and the northern portion of the Calgary Forest Area to take measures to prevent the ignition of new forest fires.

As of Tuesday, Foothills County declared a fire restriction limiting small and large burns as well as fireworks. Residential fire pits and campfires in campgrounds are still allowed, as are gas and propane stoves and wood pellet smokers. The County of Newell, which includes the city of Brooks, is also under a fire restriction and has been since early May.

Vulcan County, on the other hand, moved into a full fire ban on Monday, leading to the cancellation of all active fire and burn permits, recreational fires, and fireworks.

The northern portion of the Calgary Forest Area, which includes Banff, Canmore, and Lake Louise, is under a fire advisory as of Wednesday.

Burning is still allowed with a valid permit, but fireworks are not permitted.

Albertans are asked to take precautions when burning — never leaving a campfire unattended and are being reminded to soak it, stir it, and soak it again to ensure it is extinguished.

If you see a wildfire, report it immediately by calling 310-FIRE.
