Calgary crews respond to fire at SE asphalt plant

A fire in Calgary’s southeast prompted a significant response Thursday night.

Crews arrived shortly after 10 p.m. on 42 Avenue SE to reports of a plant that had gone up in flames.

“When they first arrived, they found the asphalt plant was on fire. They made sure all the employees were accounted for, and began a defensive counter attack,” said Battalion Chief Scott Cowan.

The Calgary Fire hazmat team was also on scene.

“There’s CFD hazmat crews monitoring the air quality due to the nature of the fire and the big plume of smoke that was coming off it,” Cowan explained.

No one was hurt and the fire was brought under control a few hours later.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
