Airdrie RCMP warn of new take on old scam

RCMP in Airdrie are warning of a new version of an old scam once again making the rounds.

On Wednesday at 1 p.m., police say a resident got a call from someone, who sounded like their son, telling him he was in jail and need $8,500 for bail.

The victim was told two police officers would come to pickup the money from the house and RCMP say the scammers even gave a false name and badge number.

On a different call, the victim was told officers couldn’t come, but a private carrier would be sent and he would use the code word “Blue” to get the money.

While he did withdraw the money, he became suspicious and called the number the scammers provided, and heard a woman identifying herself as RCMP.

After speaking with the real police, the man soon arrived at the victim’s door with the special code word.

The suspect grabbed an envelope which was handed to him, but didn’t contain any money.

The victim’s doorbell camera got a near picture perfect image of the male suspect and RCMP are now trying to track him down.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police or CrimeStoppers.
