Cyclist-involved collision closes Canyon Meadows Drive

A major collision at Canyon Meadows Drive and Parkland Boulevard Monday morning had much of Canyon Meadows Drive shut down for hours.

The area reopened to traffic just before 11 a.m.

At the scene surrounded by police tape, debris covered the road around three vehicles, all with different levels of damage.

And, still wedged in between two SUVs, long after the collision occurred, was a red bicycle.

Calgary police said in a statement to CityNews that around 6:35 a.m., officers responded to report of a multi-vehicle collision involving a cyclist in the southeast.

Investigators believe an SUV and a vehicle collided in the intersection of Parkland Boulevard and Canyon Meadows Drive SE.

During the collision, the impact caused the vehicles to also strike a cyclist who was travelling near the intersection.

One driver and a cyclist were taken to hospital.

Residents who live in the area say they’ve been raising the alarm on this particular intersection for some time.

“I’m an engineer and I look at this and think ‘This is crazy,'” Michael, who’s home is near the crash site, told CityNews. “Some very simple fixes could mitigate a lot of these accidents. I called the city myself about a month ago and gave them some recommendations.

“What’s happening is people who are coming on to Canyon Meadows from Parkland Boulevard, sometimes they’re going straight when they should be driving to the right,” he added.

Others who spoke with CityNews say they avoid the area, especially in the morning, because of how hectic the roadway can get.
