Calgary dentist allegedly filed $100K worth of false insurance claims

Calgary police have charged a dentist from a southwest family practice after they allegedly submitted $100,000 worth of false insurance claims.

Investigators say the insurance provider reported to police in June that they received “several discrepancies” for claims on fillings and root canal treatments, all of which were submitted by the same dentist at All About Family Dental on Elbow Drive.

Together with the insurance provider, police say evidence was compiled to support a criminal charge “based on discrepancies and false billings” that involved 53 patients between June 2015 and June 2021.

The claims totaled $97,540, according to investigators.

Patients weren’t aware of the false claims until after the investigation, police say.

The dentist turned herself in to Calgary police on Monday, Nov. 6 without incident, the CPS says.

Alena Vladimiro Smadych has been charged with one count of fraud over $5,000.

The 53-year-old is set to appear in court on Friday.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact police at 403-266-1234 or anonymously through CrimeStoppers.
