Cavalry FC sign Australian forward Lleyton Brooks to 2-year contract

Calgary’s soccer club Cavalry FC has signed Lleyton Brooks to a two-year contract with a one-year option Tuesday ahead of the 2024 season.

“I’m ecstatic to be joining this club which had such immense success last season, and with such passionate supporters. I know that I will bring a lot to the team, and I’m hungry to bring more trophies back to Calgary,” said Brooks in a news release.

He joins as a free agent from the Australian A-league team Melbourne Victory, where he made 32 appearances.

Brooks also played for the Brisbane Strikers before joining Brisbane’s Roar’s youth side, where the club achieved the 2018/19 Y-League Championship.

He joined Melbourne Victory in 2019, where he made his professional debut in 2020. Brooks won Melbourne Victory’s Young Player of the Season award after scoring two goals in nine appearances.

Cavalry FC head coach and general manager Tommy Wheeldon Jr. feels Brooks will “make our team better.”

“He is a dynamic player with a big upside, that loves to drive at the opposition defence and has good quality in his shooting and delivery. He is at a great age where he can only get better and I’m certain he will add another dimension to our attack,” he said.

Cavalry finished top of the Canadian Premier League (CPL) with a 16-7-5 record, which earned them the CPL Shield.

However, the team failed to win the CPL cup title against Forge FC, which defended its 2022 title with a 2-1 win after extra time.
