Bengal cat nabbed from Sylvan Lake found in Ontario

A woman in Sylvan Lake, a town west of Red Deer, is looking for a way to get her cat back after it was catnapped and driven halfway across the country.

Captain is a little bit of an escape artist, owner Jordanna Meadows describes, so when he snuck out on Dec. 12, she didn’t worry about him at first.

But when Meadows posted a picture of Captain on the “Sylvan Lake Pets Lost and Found” Facebook page, she learned he was the victim of a wild theft.

“‘I have some information about your beautiful cat,'” Meadows said, recalling the message.

“Goes on to tell me that her sister and her sister’s boyfriend, who lives in my area here and found my cat and claimed him as their own. The next day, they told her that they are heading back to Quebec and bringing the cat with them.”

Captain is a Bengal cat, which is an exotic and expensive cat.

“He looks like a little leopard, he’s got like brown fur and beautiful black spots like a leopard,” Meadows told CityNews.

And maybe that’s what made him a target.

However, the alleged thieves didn’t make it back to Quebec with the cat, as Captain flew the coop again — this time in Kenora, Ont, a nearly 16-hour drive from Sylvan Lake.

So Meadows posted in Kenora’s lost pet groups.

“Probably within 20 minutes, I had a lady reach out to me and say ‘I’ve been feeding this cat, I wonder if he’s yours.'”

That lady had Captain’s microchip scanned, which confirmed he was the correct pet.

But the story isn’t over yet, as Meadows is still trying to figure out how she is going to get Captain back to Alberta.

However, she is grateful for the help.

“If she never texted me and let me know that this was going on, I would still be searching all of Sylvan Lake looking for — basically — for a cat who was eaten by foxes, is what I would be doing right now,” Meadows said.
