Alberta welcomes New Year’s babies, Edmonton has first of 2024

New Year’s babies are here, and Edmonton took the title for the first baby of 2024.
Alberta Health Services says Isley Noelle Falk was born at midnight on Jan. 1 at Grey Nuns Community Hospital in Edmonton, weighting 10lbs on the dot.
Her mom Laura Falk is from Edmonton, and says she’s thrilled to welcome her daughter into the world.
“We weren’t expecting Jan. 1 as I was induced on Dec. 29. It’s crazy she hung on for so long. We were hoping for 123123, and we were surprised that she was born right at the stroke of midnight. Either way it’s a special day,” she said.
Calgary’s New Year’s baby arrived at Foothills Medical Centre at 12:25 a.m.
A baby girl named Marianthi was born to parents Chris and Marina Qira after a “brief and easy labour.”
She weighed six pounds five ounces.
“We were at a New Year’s Eve party when my wife started feeling pain around 9 p.m.,” said dad Chris. “We went to the hospital, all dressed up, and watched the fireworks at midnight from our room. A few minutes later our daughter was born – it was the best gift ever!”
Shortly after 3 a.m., Red Deer saw its first baby of 2024 born at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre.
Baby Bailee was born to parents Victoria Dorie and Scott Beardy at 3:11 a.m., weighing seven pounds, nine ounces.
“We weren’t sure if she would be a New Year’s baby or not when I went into labour,” said Dorie. “There were others in labour around the same time so it was a bit of a surprise to be told we had the first one of the new year here.”
The newborn is the fifth child for the couple.
