Calgary police arrest two after failed carjacking spree

Calgary police have charged a man and a woman after a spree of attempted carjackings in the city’s northeast.

Around 4:15 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 4, investigators say a man was trying to drive out of the parking lot of a convenience store at 5260 Falsbridge Gate NE, when a dark-coloured Ford F-150 blocked his path.

Police say the driver of the F-150 approached the victim’s car with what appeared to be a shotgun and took control of the vehicle.

The victim left his vehicle and went into a nearby store.

Investigators say the suspect was not able to start the victim’s vehicle because it was a standard, and left the vehicle in their truck.

Around 30 minutes laters, on Rundleson Way NE, a woman was clearing snow from her vehicle when the F-150 approached her.

Police say the woman locked herself in the vehicle and drove away when she saw the driver of the truck approach her with a gun.

Then, around 5:10 a.m., a man was sitting in his vehicle of Pinepoint Drive NE when two people approached the vehicle, and a man carrying a shotgun demanded the victim get out of the vehicle.

The driver left the scene on foot and the man with the gun and a woman got into the vehicle, police said.

Investigators say the suspects weren’t able to start the vehicle and once again, left the scene in their own truck.

Officers found the F-150 abandoned near the intersection of 26 Avenue NW and 56 Street NE.

At approximateky 6 a.m., and with the help of the Canine Unit, police were ablke to find two suspects and took them into custody.

Levi Barrett, 21, of Calgary is charged with:

· Three counts of robbery with a firearm
· One count of careless use of a firearm
· One count of possession of a firearm without a licence
· One count of possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle
· One count of unauthorized possession of a firearm
· One count of theft of a motor vehicle
· One count of possession of stolen property under $5,000
· Two counts of no insurance
· One count of no registration
· One count of driving without a valid operator’s licence

Emma Jessup, 21, of Calgary is charged with:

· Three counts of robbery with a firearm
· One count of careless use of a firearm
· One count of possession of a firearm without a licence
· One count of possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle
· One count of unauthorized possession of a firearm
· One count of theft of a motor vehicle
· One count of possession of stolen property under $5,000

Both suspects are expected to appear in court on Friday, Feb. 9.
