Calgary police lay charges in northeast homicide

Calgary police have laid charges in the murder of 28-year-old Calgarian Jose Miguel Gutierrez Polanco who was found dead in a home on Grier Avenue NE on Feb. 14.(Courtesy Calgary police)

Calgary police have charged one person in the murder of a man in the northeast community of Greenview last month.

Investigators say on Feb. 14, officers were called to Grier Avenue NE for reports of a dead man inside a home.

After an autopsy the next day, police classified the death as a homicide.

The victim was identified as 28-year-old Jose Miguel Gutierrez Polanco, of Calgary.

Thanks to information from the public and ongoing investigative efforts, police have charged 27-year-old Hans Nicolas Jimenez Varela with one count of second-degree murder.

He is set to appear in court on Monday, March 11.
