An Alberta man is facing charges for impersonating an officer after allegedly driving a decommissioned police cruiser with working sirens and blue lights.
RCMP in Three Hills began investigating on Jan. 8 after receiving complaints about a suspicious Ford Crown Victoria parked at a home in the village of Elnora, about 70 kilometres southeast of Red Deer.
Mounties say the car, an older model used by police, appeared to display a “police interceptor” badge on its bumper, suggesting it was still an active law-enforcement vehicle.
Investigators learned the same car was spotted months earlier on Oct. 17, 2025, near Sylvan Lake. Two motorists reported seeing it speeding with its blue lights flashing, leading them to believe it was a police vehicle.
Officers got a search warrant and seized the car, which was found to have a functioning siren and public-address system. Mounties say the car had once been a legitimate police vehicle, but had since been modified with additional equipment.
RCMP have charged 64-year-old Randy Telford with impersonating a peace officer. He is scheduled to appear in a Red Deer courtroom in April.
Police are asking any other motorists who may have seen the vehicle, or anyone with additional information, to contact them at 403-443-5539 or submit tips to Crime Stoppers anonymously.
