Calgary city councillor says he hasn’t signed petition to recall Mayor Gondek, blames typo

Has Sean Chu signed the petition calling for Mayor Jyoti Gondek’s removal from office?

It isn’t really clear at this point.

This morning, the Ward 4 councillor replied to a question via email — from Feb. 10 — about whether he had signed it, indicating he and all his family members had signed “the form.”

However, since CityNews published the story online, Chu has taken to the X account listed on his council website, saying he regrets the miscommunication and hasn’t signed the recall petition.

CityNews has reached out for further information.

There has been plenty of tension between the mayor and councillor over the years.

A couple of years ago, Chu admitted to taking a photo of the mayor’s license plate, and sharing the information.

Gondek said she felt her safety was compromised.

Chu was removed from serving as deputy mayor, and had to take a training course as a result.

Most recently, the mayor called out the councillor for using a sexually suggestive word during a council meeting.

Chu apologized but said he didn’t think the word used was as controversial as the mayor thought.
