Calgary 25th annual Youth Hiring Fair expecting thousands of jobseekers

Calgary’s Youth Employment Centre is gearing up to see thousands for Thursday’s 25th annual Youth Hiring Fair.

The job fair has had around 5,000 youth between the ages of 15 and 24 each year, and they expect the same amount to come down and connect with over 80 employers looking to hire immediately.

Tara Huxley, the community programs and services coordinator with the City of Calgary with the centre says thousands of jobs are available.

“We see a wide variety of sectors that will be there looking for young people to be employees,” she told CityNews.

“So some of those sectors will be food and beverage, hospitality, entry-level construction or trades, social services or public health sector, retail … those are to name a few.”

The Youth Hiring Fair is free, youth only have to bring a resume, but the city says chances of landing a job are much better for those who go to the centre, which is on 315 10 Avenue SE, to prepare.

And even for those who can’t make it, Huxley says free career services to help young people find work are available year-round.

“And even for a young person who is thinking ‘Do I want to go into that field?’ The hiring fair is also just an amazing opportunity to go up to a booth and be prepared to ask a few questions, see what they are looking for, what skill sets is someone not aware that they needed,” Huxley said.

“Showing a young person, ‘What does a targeted resume look like?’ ‘How do you get ready for certain types of interviews?’ How do you job search for a hidden market? Where would you go to get more experience?”

The job fair is on March 28 from 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Big Four building on Stampede Park.
