Downtown Calgary bridges reopen 20 hours later, following police incident

The police situation that shut down the Reconciliation Bridge and 4th and 5th Avenue Flyovers since 10:30 Wednesday night ended just before 6pm Thursday.

Multiple bridges into downtown Calgary were shut down for nearly 20 hours from late Wednesday through Thursday afternoon for an ongoing police incident.

The 4 Avenue flyover and Reconciliation Bridge were shut down to traffic around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday due to a man who was refusing to come down from the top of the bridge.

“There’s a distraught individual on the top of that bridge,” Insp. Rob Patterson told CityNews. “We’ve brought in crisis negotiators and a command team to get the man safely off the bridge.”

The individual was sitting at the top of the pilings on the Reconciliation Bridge.

Police said the man eventually came down on his own around 6 p.m. Thursday and the bridges reopened to traffic.

The shut down caused headaches for commuters as the closure left no access into the east end of downtown through the morning rush and afternoon drive.

The 5 Avenue flyover was also initially shut down for several hours but reopened early Thursday morning.
