A Medicine Hat woman is facing charges after police recovered thousands of pieces of stolen mail in the southern Alberta city.
The Medicine Hat Police Service (MHPS) say they began investigating after getting 16 reports of mail being stolen from community mailboxes between February and April of this year.
On Apr. 10, officers responded to a report of a theft in progress at a mailbox and found a female suspect leaving the scene.
The woman was arrested and police allegedly found break-in tools and hundreds of items of mail in her possession.
Investigators subsequently executed a search warrant at a local home and storage lockers where they say they recovered thousands of pieces of stolen mail.
Medicine Hat resident Cassandra Chenoweth, 41, is facing several charges. She is scheduled to appear in a provincial; court next month.
“The investigation is ongoing as MHPS investigators are now working closely with Canada Post Inspectors and its is expected further charges will be laid,” reads a release from police.
Police say the recovered mail items will be returned to the intended recipients once they are no longer required for the investigation.
