Poor conditions on Highway 2 north of Calgary, RCMP advise against travel

Strong wind gusts and icy conditions made for a difficult commute north of Calgary on Wednesday.

RCMP warned of poor road conditions north of Calgary Wednesday due to cold and snowy weather.

Just before 8:30 a.m., Airdrie RCMP said police, fire, and EMS were at a series of collisions on Highway 2.

Highway 2 northbound was also been reduced to one lane at 40 Avenue.

Police say investigations into these incidents are in the early stages.

RCMP said Highway 2 north of Airdrie was open at the time but travel was not recommended.

Innisfail RCMP also said early Wednesday morning that Highway 2 north of Innisfail to south of Bowden was seeing less-than-ideal conditions.

The roads were covered in ice and snow, which police said resulted in multiple collisions and vehicles driving off the road.

No injuries have been reported so far, according to RCMP.

Police are reminding the public to slow down and drive to current road conditions.

Drivers were also warned of delays on northbound and southbound Highway 2, and any other area affected by the weather.

Conditions were poor across Alberta, according to RCMP, with many roads and highways reportedly covered in ice and/or snow, including at Highway 44 and 37 in the Westlock area.

If possible, drivers are advised to avoid travel in the area or use different routes.
