Calgary company to pay $330K in 2022 workplace death

A Calgary industrial equipment company will pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines after a employee was killed on a worksite more than two years ago.

Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) board says on Monday, Westpower Equipment Ltd. pleaded guilty to one charge of failing to ensure the health of safety of a worker in a Calgary courtroom.

The Crown withdrew 22 other charges the company was facing under OHS legislation, according to the province.

The charges stem from an incident at a Calgary worksite on March 3, 2022.

A worker was operating an overhead crane to install a pump cover, when the cover released from the rigging and hit the worker, which caused fatal injuries.

The company was fined was fined $275,000 plus a $55,000 victim fine surcharge, for a total of $330,000.

Both the company and the Crown have up to 30 days to appeal the conviction of penalty.
