Man who allegedly asked teen for sex at Calgary rec centre facing charges

Calgary police have laid charges against a man who allegedly exposed himself and asked a teenager for sex in the changeroom of a northwest recreation centre earlier this month.
Investigators say the victim was at the Thornhill Aquatic & Recreation Centre on Sunday May 5, when he was approached by a man he didn’t know while using the changeroom.
The man made several unwanted sexual comments and exposed himself to the teen, according to police.
The victim didn’t engage with the man, and shortly after the interaction, he left the changeroom.
Police say the suspect also exited the changeroom and, while sitting in a common area of the recreation centre, again made unwanted sexual comments to the victim as he walked by.
Investigators say the teenager told his mom about the interactions with the man, and the incident was reported to police.

Police then made an appeal to the public to identify the man, circulating images from security cameras.
Tips from the public ultimately led the man to be identified as 64-year-old Calvin Edwin Oatway.
He is facing one charge of commodification of sexual services from a person under the age of 18 and one count of committing an indecent act.
Oatway is no longer allowed to attend the Thornhill Aquatic & Recreation Centre.
He is set to appear in court on Friday, July 19.
