Teenager accused in SE Calgary basketball court stabbing heads to trial

The trial of a teenager suspected in a fatal stabbing at a southeast basketball court last September starts Tuesday.

The 16-year-old and his 18-year-old brother are charged with second-degree murder in the death of Danillo Canales Glenn in Copperfield on Sept. 5, 2023.

Calgary police said at the time the 18-year-old Canales Glenn was with friends when two strangers approached and started a fight.

Canales Glenn was then bear-sprayed and stabbed. He was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition and later died.

In the wake of his death, friends and family of the teen reminisced, saying Canales Glenn had just graduated high school and was getting reading to start his post-secondary education at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technolgy (SAIT).

The trial is expected to last two weeks.

The teen suspect can’t be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, and his adult brother is also not being named to protect the identity of his sibling.

Various reports indicate the 18-year-old suspect has yet to have a trial, but preliminary hearings happened earlier this year.
