Contracting company, supervisor fined thousands in 2019 Airdrie worker death

A construction company and one of its supervisors, will pay thousands of dollars in fines related to the death of a worker onsite nearly five years ago.

Alberta says Volker Stevin Contracting Ltd. and Michael O’Neill, a supervisor, were each convicted of two counts under occupational health and safety act in a Calgary court room on April 11. Last week, the party’s were sentenced.

Volker Stevin was convicted under the OHS Act for failing to ensure the health and safety of a worker for allowing a worker to stay close to moving equipment.

According to the province, the company was fined $480,000, including the 20 per cent victim surcharge. The supervisor was convicted under the same act, also for failing to ensure the health and safety of a worker for exposing them to danger from moving equipment.

The province says O’Neill was fined $66,000 including the 20 per cent victim surcharge.

On Oct., 2, 2019, a person was working near a storm drain on a residential street in Airdrie when they were hit by a vehicle driven by the supervior and killed.

The company, supervisor and the Crown have up to 30 days to appeal the sentences.
