Calgary police respond to mental health crisis on Peace Bridge, no longer asking pedestrians to avoid area

Calgary police asked pedestrians to avoid the Peace Bridge Thursday morning as officers responded to a person experiencing a mental health crisis.

In a post to social media just before 6 a.m., police said there were multiple resources deployed to the Peace Bridge and there wasn’t any threat to public safety.

Police said all roads surrounding the bridge were open, but the bridge itself was closed to pedestrians.

“This will not affect vehicle traffic on Memorial. However, it probably will have some affect on foot traffic on both the north side and the south side of the Peace Bridge,” Staff Sgt. John Guigon told CityNews.

Those planning to take the bridge as part of their walk were asked to find a different route.
