Crews were able to knock down a fire that broke out at a townhouse in southwest Calgary on Tuesday morning and prevent it from spreading to neighbouring units.

The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) responded to a garage fire on Oakmoor Drive SW near 24 Street and Southland Drive around 11 a.m.

Responding fire fighters on the way to the blaze saw dark smoke from a distance and the fire was quickly upgraded to a two-alarm.

Crews encountered a garage on fire with a vehicle inside and were able to contain the flames, preventing it from spreading to the residential part of the building.

The townhome unit where the garage fire started sustained smoke damage and neighbouring units had some smoke inside, according the fire department. Residents were evacuated and weren’t allowed back in until crews checked carbon monoxide levels.

One person had smoke inhalation but was not taken to hospital. No other injuries were reported.

“Firefighters confirmed that the home did have working smoke alarms which are very important as early warning devices to alert residents to a fire,” reads a released from CFD.

Investigators are still trying to determine the exact origin of the fire.
