Woman in 40s dead, homicide unit investigating after incident at NW Calgary home

A woman has died in the Northwest Calgary community of Bowness, in what Calgary Police are calling a suspicious death. Silvia Naranjo reports from the scene.

A homicide investigation is underway after a woman died from injuries at a home in northwest Calgary on Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency crews were called to a home on 73 Street NW, in the area of 77 Street NW and Bowness Road, around 1:10 p.m. for reports of a woman in medical distress.

Officers found a woman in her 40s injured at the home. Police attempted lifesaving efforts but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A short time later, officers were seen handcuffing a visibly distraught man outside the home before he was taken away by police. Witnesses say he was shouting “I didn’t do it” as he was taken into custody.

Witnesses also tell CityNews two young children were seen coming out of the house covered in blood.

“There were children present, but they are safe,” says Calgary police Insp. Krista Ryan.

Police say no other injuries have been reported.

The home where the incident occurred was surrounded by police tape and a heavy police presence remained in the area throughout the afternoon.

The homicide unit has taken over the investigation and an autopsy will be conducted on Wednesday morning.

“As the investigation is in the early stages, no additional details are available at this time,” Ryan adds.

Anyone with additional information is being asked to contact Calgary police, or anonymously through CrimeStoppers.
