Young woman killed in NE Calgary shooting not intended target: CPS

Calgary police say the 19-year-old woman killed in a drive-by shooting on a busy road late Saturday afternoon was not believed to be the intended target. Jillian Code reports.

Police say a young woman who was killed in a daylight shooting in the city’s northeast over the weekend was likely not the intended target.

Calgary police began investigating after officers were called to Foothills Medical Centre around 6 p.m. Saturday for reports of two people arriving at the hospital who had been shot.

In an update on Monday, investigators now say they think the shooting happened around 5:20 p.m. when the two victims were in a white 2008 Acura MDX driving westbound on 32 Avenue NE on the Deerfoot Trail overpass.

A suspect vehicle drove up to the Acura and fired multiple shots at the victims, police say.

A young woman who was sitting in the passenger seat was pronounced dead in hospital. Following an autopsy completed on Monday, she has been identified as 19-year-old Calgary resident Jordan Leinen.

The 17-year-old male driver arrived at hospital with serious injuries. His condition is now stable.

Police don’t think the shooting was random but they do not believe Leinen was the intended target.

Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson of the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit says it appears the 17-year-old boy was the target.

“A young woman lost her life, and a family is now left without their loved one,” says Gregson. “This type of violence will not be tolerated in our city, and we are putting several resources from across the Service into investigating this incident.”

Investigators are asking for anyone with security footage or dashcam video of the area to contact them.

“It is a bit of a remote area with not a lot of buildings,” says Gregson. “There are not a lot of cameras in that area.”

People with information can contact police at 403-266-1234.

The incident is Calgary’s 10th homicide of the year.
