No evidence of shooting after man claimed to be shot outside downtown grocery store: CPS

By CityNews Staff

Police say a reported shooting in downtown Calgary early Wednesday turned out to be a false flag.

Emergency crews responded to an apparent shooting outside a Safeway grocery store near 8 Street and 11 Avenue NW around 4:30 a.m.

A man was taken to Foothills Medical Centre in serious condition with what was initially believed to be a gunshot wound.

Police tell CityNews they learned there was no actual shooting and the injured individual had a “superficial” wound.

“They had claimed they had been the victim of a shooting, but it was determined that was not the case,” a CPS spokesperson says.

Police say there is no threat to public safety.
