What’s happening in Calgary this August Long Weekend

Calgary's largest food festival kicks off Thursday, returning to Lot 6, a parking lot turned event space. Rayn Rashid finds out if people are enjoying the current site or if they miss the old iconic spot at Eau Claire.

Music, theatre, food, and more — there’s plenty to take in in Calgary this August Long Weekend.

Calgary Fringe Theatre Festival

This unique nine-day event features a blend of indoor and street performances from epic storytelling and comedy, to workshops and one-person puppet shows.

The 18th annual festival runs from Friday, Aug. 2 to Saturday, Aug. 10.

Performances are taking place across the city at a variety of venues, including The Next Page book store, Lantern Community Church, and Digital Theatre Playhouse.

Taste of Calgary

The festival for foodies began Thursday and runs until holiday Monday, Aug. 5.

Attendees can discover Calgary’s global cuisines from a mix of unique restaurants and beverage companies.

Taste of Calgary also features musicians and artisans, entrepreneurs, and interactive activities.

Admission to the event is free and ‘taste’ tickets cost $1 each — each dish ranges between two to seven tickets.

The festival is hosted at Lot 6, located at 4 Avenue and 9 Avenue SW.

Chasing Summer

The electronic dance music festival runs Saturday Aug. 3 and Sunday Aug. 4 at the Max Bell Centre Festival grounds at 1001 Barlow Trail SE.

The line-up for the two-day festival is jam-packed, featuring headliners Illenium, Tchami x Malaa, Deadmau5, DJ Snake, and Two Friends.

Passes are still available for the weekend, as are single day passes.

Calgary Bluesfest

The 20th annual blues music festival hosts a full week of events over four days with non-stop music.

Artists featured on the lineup include Al Lerman, Big Llou Johnson, Bobby Dean Blackburn, Dawn Pemberton, Monkeyjunk, and more.

Show are played at Cowboys Park, formerly Millennium Park, located at 1220 9 Avenue SW.

Ticket prices vary and can be purchased on the event’s website.
