The Government of Alberta says Jasper residents can now register to tour the townsite and see what’s been damaged after last week’s devastating wildfire.

The province is working with Parks Canada and the Municipality of Jasper to provide the opportunity to those who call Jasper home.

All Jasper residents are eligible to register, however priority will be given to those who have had property lost or damaged.

“We appreciate everyone’s desire to return to Jasper and see the state of their homes and community for themselves. Many partners have worked quickly to get these tours scheduled,” said Mike Ellis, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services.

“Being able to return back home to survey damage is the first step to recovery and rebuilding. That is why Alberta’s government made these tours a top priority for evacuees.”

Once registered, residents will be provided further details regarding the tour.

Officials note that the tours will still be subject to wildfire conditions. While the fire in the town is out, one still continues to burn nearby.

Once on the tour, residents will not be allowed to leave the bus while inside the national park.

Mental health supports will be available on-site prior to the tours, as well as on the buses and afterwards, in order to help people prepare for seeing the disaster site.

Alberta Health Service is also providing support for evacuees 24/7 by calling 211.

Tour registration can be done on the province’s website.
