Small plane crash lands on golf course near Calgary airport

An investigation is underway after a small plane crash landed on a golf course in northeast Calgary on Friday afternoon.

Calgary police tell CityNews the single-occupant plane crashed onto Wingfield Golf Club, just south of the airport, before 1 p.m.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is investigating and confirm there was “an emergency landing” involving a Piper PA-31 Navajo aircraft.

Early reports indicate the plane was attempting to land on a runway at the airport before crashing on the golf course.

Images from the scene appear to a show a plane with significant front-end damage. Witnesses who were playing golf at the time say the pilot was outside and walking around before he was checked by paramedics.

“One of the guys I was playing with, he actually saw the plane coming down,” says golfer Ken, who had two holes of his afternoon round left when the plane came crashing down.

“When I looked up I saw the tail of it spin around. Never seen anything like that, it’s a good thing the pilot is okay.”
