Funeral held for Rocky View County employee fatally shot after offering to help assailants

People gathered to mourn the loss of Colin Hough on Sunday, the man killed after offering to help assailants with their burning truck in early August.

An obituary posted in the Airdrie City View reads he was a quiet and steady presence in his family.

Hough loved baseball and was happiest watching and building Lego with his two kids.

The 45-year-old moved to Alberta looking for work years ago, where he fell in love with the Rocky Mountains, and soon after, he met the love of his life in its shadow, where they chose to plant their roots in Airdrie.

“Airdrie was their forever home, and they would never consider living anywhere else,” the obituary reads.

It says Hough took pride in working for Rockyview County and its people.

As people mourn the loss of Hough, many are still providing support for the family through a GoFundMe, which has raised over $93,000.

“He leaves behind a beautiful family, including his wife and two small children who will need as much help as possible as they navigate this unimaginable and unexpected loss,” the fundraising page said.

One of the suspects wanted in the deadly shooting is still on the loose.

Elijah Strawberry, 28, is described as armed and extremely dangerous, and the RCMP have yet to find him.

“Of course, it goes without saying, that there is going to be a heightened sense of vigilism whenever they may encounter Mr. Strawberry. But from what I can say, talking to the members of the detachment … everyone is doing well,” said S Sgt. Mark Wielgosz with the Strathmore RCMP.

“The major crime unit teams are working around the clock. While there may be a certain level of fatigue, they are very motivated to bringing Mr. Strawberry into custody safely.”

Mounties say any successful tip leading to the arrest of the 28-year-old suspect will be eligible for a $2,000 reward.

Anyone with information, regardless of how minor it may be, is being urged to contact police, or CrimeStoppers anonymously.
