Police renew call for tips in deadly gang-related shooting in SW Calgary

Police are hoping to jog someone’s memory as they release some new information about a gang-related shooting in the city’s southwest more than three years ago.

Calgary police continue to investigate the killing of Gurkeert “Gary” Singh Kalkat who was found dead in his vehicle in an alley on May 22, 2021 near 18 Street and 26 Avenue SW.

Kalkat had connections to Surrey, B.C. and investigators believe the fatal shooting was part of an “ongoing gang conflict occurring throughout the lower mainland in B.C.”

His brother was killed nine days earlier outside a restaurant in Burnaby, B.C.

“We know allegiances and loyalties to various organized crime groups can change over time, so we are once again asking the public to come forward with tips or information that could further the investigation,” reads a Monday release from CPS.

Shortly after the shooting in Calgary, police identified a blue four-door Subaru Impreza as a getaway car used by the suspects. Investigators have yet to find the car and now say it could also be a Subaru Legacy.

Investigators think the Subaru fled the scene through the Marda Loop area by travelling westbound on 32 Avenue SW, south on 22 Street SW to 33 Avenue SW, and then north on Crowchild Trail.

“These types of organized crime-related files are often difficult to solve without help from the public,” says Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson of the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit. “This, and other gang-related files, are never closed.”

“We will continue to investigate these incidents even years after they occur, as there is always a chance new information will become available to aid in solving the case.”

Anyone with information about the shooting, or the suspect vehicle, is urged to contact police, or CrimeStoppers anonymously.
