September heat wave forecast for Calgary in coming days

Despite the first day of fall being a little more than two weeks away, Calgary is set to see temperatures reminiscent of mid-summer for the next little while.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) is forecasting temperatures in the mid-to-high 20s for the next five days — Thursday is set to reach 26 C with a moderate UV index, while Friday and Saturday are set to reach 30 C. The heat continues Sunday and Monday, with forecasted temperatures of 29 C.

“It’s so hot because the jet stream is well to the north, it acts as a curtain and it’s trapping all the cold air where it’s quite normally cold,” explained 660 NewsRadio meteorologist Kevin Stanfield. “The next time we can expect the jet stream to drop is still a couple weeks away and before then, we could see another heat warning as we head toward the weekend.”

It’s been a hot summer in most of Western Canada. The mean temperature in Calgary in July was 20.8 C for the first time in the city’s recorded history, according to Stanfield.

But, he has a warning for those wishing away the heat.

“Get out there and enjoy it while it lasts — we know what winters look like here!”

He adds the seasonal high for this time of year is around 21 C, while the low is around 7 C.

“We have been able to surpass both of those margins for quite a few days of this month,” Stanfield said.

Summer 2024 was record-breaking in more ways than one, he adds.

The warmest day recorded this summer, according to Stanfield, was 34.5 C, exceeding the 30-year average of 32.5 C.

The 30-year-average for the most rain in a day is around 35 mm. On Aug. 5, Calgary saw 52.7 mm of precipitation.
