An expanded major road in northwest Calgary will be available to motorists starting next week.
A grand opening took place on Friday for the expansion of 144 Avenue NW — the city says the project is complete and will open to traffic on Monday.
The new section of roadway is just over a kilometre in length and connects 144 Avenue NW from 24 Street NW to Symons Valley Road. The expanded section includes a new bridge over West Nose Creek.
The city is touting the new complete version of the road as the “only continuous east-west connection north of Stoney Trail.”
The more than $61 million project also includes additions to Calgary’s pathway and bike network.
“The expansion of 144 Avenue N.W. is an important step in supporting our city’s growth,” says Mayor Jyoti Gondek in a statement. “By improving our road and pathway network, we’re helping communities access the services they need and creating a more connected city for everyone.”
Both the federal and provincial governments helped fund the project through the Community Building Fund and the Municipal Sustainability Initiative.
Federal housing minister Sean Fraser was in Calgary for the grand opening, saying the new road “enhances the city’s connectivity,” fuels economic growth, and ensures safer and more efficient travel.
