Man in critical condition after shooting at NW Calgary hotel, two arrested

Rayn Rashid reports on an early morning shooting at a NW Calgary. The victim was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition. After several hours of negotiating, two people were taken into custody.

A man is fighting for his life in hospital after a shooting at a hotel in northwest Calgary Wednesday morning, police say.

Police say just before 4 a.m., officers were called to the Olympia Lodge Motel at 5020 16 Avenue NW.

When they arrived, police found a man who had been shot. He was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police say officers made sure there was no further risk to the public and a short time later, determined two suspects were still at the hotel in a nearby room.

Two men were eventually arrested and safely taken into custody.

Calgary police believe the incident is targeted and there is no further risk to the public.

The investigation is ongoing and police say charges are pending.

Drivers were asked to avoid the 5000 block of 16 Avenue NW for several hours during the incident.

EMS and a Calgary police tactical unit were also on scene assist.

A man staying at the Olympia Lodge told CityNews the night has been filled with disruptions.

“I heard [the suspects] all night, in and out of the room, banging and crashing and carrying on,” he said. “The cops showed up once and the second time they showed up, all of a sudden everything got quiet and [the suspects] wouldn’t come out of the room.”

Officers reportedly used flashbangs and a megaphone to communicate with the people inside the motel.
