Calgary expected to get weather warmup next week

It may not feel like it now, but Calgary is about to get a reprieve from the cold and snowy weather that has taken over the city in the last week.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) is calling for near double digit highs throughout most of next week after a chilly weekend.

“The winds of change are just around the corner,” says 660 NewsRadio meteorologist Kevin Stanfield. “We can expect melting temperatures for a couple of days starting early next week.”

Stanfield says a ridge of high-pressure will push the jetstream to the north and setup a curtain that protects Calgary from northern winds that have been cooling the city down since mid-November.

“We can expect our temperatures to return to a lot closer to seasonal,” he says.

The colder air is expected to persist through the weekend with a high of -9 C on Saturday, dipping down to an overnight low of -21 C. Sunday will see a similar daytime high, but then things are expected to shift, according to ECCC.

The weather agency is calling for a high of 5 C on Monday, 8 C on Tuesday, 9 C on Wednesday and 8 C on Thursday.
