Calgary fire crews responded to a fire at a downtown apartment building Monday afternoon.
Calgary Fire Department (CFD) spokesperson Carol Henke tells 660 NewsRadio smoke was reported at the 26-story building on 6 Avenue SW near 8 Street just before noon.
When crews arrived, they found smoke coming from a unit on the 23rd floor that had spread to multiple other floors.
The flames were quickly extinguished, and crews began searching for residents.
One person was looked at by paramedics but was not taken to hospital.
Henke says some residents weren’t able to leave the building as the elevators were down, and were forced to shelter in place. Some of the building’s residents also had mobility issues and weren’t able to quickly and effectively evacuate.
Residents were allowed back into their units once the building’s air quality was assessed.
Investigators believe the fire started in the kitchen and the unit where it broke out has significant damage.
The investigation into the exact cause of the fire is ongoing.
The CFD says kitchen fires are the most common types fires they respond to. The fire department is out witha number of tips to reduce the risk of kitchen fires in high-rise buildings.
