Blues Can to reopen in NW Calgary in 2025 after Inglewood oust

The Blues Can in Calgary’s Inglewood community will move to a new location after a housing development forced them out. Rayn Rashid speaks with patrons at the live music venue.

An iconic Calgary music venue has found new digs after being forced out of its home of 13 years for a new development.

The Blues Can lived on 9 Avenue’s Music Mile in Inglewood for 13 years, and will officially say goodbye to the building on Dec. 31.

The land at 1429 9 Avenue SE has been sold to Battistella Developments, which is planning to build a four-storey mixed use development. The building is expected to house 30 units and ground level retail space.

Changes to the area put the future of The Blues Can in limbo, but after months of work and stress, the venue says it has a new home.

In January, The Blues Can will open at 2002 16 Avenue NW, the former site of Tipperary’s Pub.

In a post to its website, the venue says it needs help to make the move successful.

“We are counting 100% on our friends, fans and music lovers from all walks of life,” the post reads. “We will be doing a variety of fund raisers — whatever we can think of over the next couple months.”

It goes on to say support from the community will be essential in ensuring the survival of the beloved spot.
