Cold Lake suspect dies in Alberta RCMP shooting

A man is dead at the hands of the RCMP after an alleged attempted stabbing incident in Cold Lake on Saturday.

Details on the situation, including how it unfolded or escalated, were not provided.

RCMP say two Mounties responded to an attempted stabbing call at a transit stop on 50 Street and 43 Avenue at around 8 p.m.

The officers reportedly found a man with an “edged weapon,” and used “intervention options,” including the use of a firearm, to take him into custody.

Police say no officers and other civilians were injured. In addition, they say there was a heavy police presence in the area. A social media post saying it ended was made at around 10 a.m. Sunday.

Mounties say the man died of his injuries after being taken to hospital.

As a result of the shooting, officers say the province’s police watchdog, the Alberta Serious Injury Response Team (ASIRT), is now investigating.

“The RCMP believes in accountability and transparency and in so doing will provide full support to the ASIRT investigators,” Mounties said in a statement.
