Calgary fire crews took care of two garage fires in the city’s south on Friday, one of which stemmed from a portable toilet caught a blaze.
The first one started in the city’s Riverbend area in the southeast at Riverstone Place at around 8:45 a.m.
Fire battalion chief Scott Cowan tells 660 NewRadio two people escaped by the time crews arrived.
Cowan says the damage is extensive but limited to an attached garage, melting some of the sides of a neighbouring house.
One person was treated on scene for smoke inhalation.
Meanwhile, the second one happened just before 11:30 a.m. on the 2500 block of 19 Street SW in a construction zone.
Crews found a portable toilet up in flames, with the fire extending to an “older style” garage with wood lining.
“Typically we don’t see porta potty’s on fire. They are not typically easily combustible, they’re all plastic,” Cowan said.
“Besides the toilet paper, there’s not much that easily lights on fire.”
He says an investigation into the cause and origin is ongoing.
