A busy night for Calgary firefighters as they battled two fires in the city’s northeast – one at a strip mall and one in a residential neighbourhood.

Investigators believe arson may be the cause of a blaze at a strip mall in Calgary’s northeast early Thursday morning.

Calgary Fire Department (CFD) Battalion Chief Alistair Robin says crews responded to a strip mall on Memorial Drive NE around 3:15 a.m. after a passerby reported flames and smoke.

Investigators say the fire appears to have started in a garbage can outside the building, before breaking the front window and entering the structure.

“The heat of the fire broke the glass,” Robin said. “It is suspicious in nature so CPS arson investigators will be reporting there this morning.”

No one was in the building at the time of the blaze and firefighters were able to douse the flames pretty quickly, he added.

Investigation into the cause of the fire continues.
