Extended ticket duration among suggested Calgary Transit changes

Calgary Transit could see some changes to help improve riders’ experience. Jillian Code reports.

Some big changes could be coming for transit riders in Calgary in the near future.

A motion put forward by Ward 3 Coun. Jasmine Mian on Tuesday includes 15 suggestions that would aim to address Calgary Transit’s growing ridership and improve customer service.

Some of the possible changes include extending the duration of tickets from 90 minutes to two hours, digital tickets that don’t expire, and including the cost of a ticket in the admission price of a hockey game or other event.

CityNews spoke with some transit riders on Wednesday who support the suggestions, saying extending the ticket duration would help account for mechanical issues on the CTrain line, or if a bus doesn’t show up.

Other suggestions include more up-to-date tracking of bus and CTrain locations, and arrival time information at major bus stops and busy areas, including university campuses or malls.

City administration is set to respond to the suggestions in their mid-May transit update.

Calgary transit adult fares increased from $3.70 to $3.80 in 2025, while an adult monthly pass went up to $118 from $115.

The changes followed a vote from city council to increase fares to ensure transit revenue keeps up with operating costs and the city’s growth.
