Calgary woman dies in Kananaskis avalanche

A 34-year-old Calgary woman was killed in an avalanche in Kananaskis, one of two that happened Friday.

Alberta Health Services EMS spokesperson Stuart Brideaux says emergency crews were called to an area north of the Black Prince day use area along Highway 742 at around 4 p.m.

RCMP from Cochrane and Stoney Nakota said Saturday that detachments responded to the call, saying four people were skiing when the avalanche happened.

Officers add that the avalanche carried the woman a distance before she was buried in the snow.

After an SOS beacon notified first responders, and helicopters retrieved the skier and brought them to the Kananaskis unit, emergency crews declared her dead at the scene.

“RCMP send their condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,” Mounties said.

No further injuries have been reported.

This avalanche happened shortly after another one near the Lake Louise Ski Resort around 3:45 p.m., where two skiers near the Pipestone Bowl triggered the avalanche.

While both skiers were buried, one was able to get out. The other still buried was pronounced dead by paramedics, according to EMS.
